I am pretty sure if you asked either one of my girls if they know the story of the Life’s Quilt, they would not only tell you that they have, but they have heard it one too many times.

However, mama thinks it bears repeating:

Everyone has their own life’s quilt, and no two quilts are exactly the same because they are made up of your fabric and your unique quilt squares.

You get to sew them in, and at the end of your life your quilt will be folded up and represent the entirety of your beautiful life’s journey.

Some of the squares will be full of adversity, trauma and extreme challenge. While others will be bursting with joy, excitement, and pure pleasure.

It is easy to forget that we have a choice in creating the joyful squares in our lives, and all too often get distracted by the difficult ones.

However, every day we get to decide what it is we’d like to create, how we are going to look at things, and what we ultimately want to do with it all.

Sadly, we don’t have the same control over the difficult squares, they happen, but still we have a choice in how we perceive them.

One of my favorite quotes that I hung onto during my cancer treatment was by Charles Swindoll. He says, “life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it. We are all faced with a series of great opportunities brilliantly disguised as impossible situations.” That was incredibly empowering as I lie on a cold table being radiated every day for 5 weeks.

I recently became acquainted with someone newly diagnosed with bone cancer. I told him how sorry I was that he would have to go through this health challenge, but I was incredibly excited for what we would have not otherwise been able to experience.

Adversity is a gift in disguise, and it is up to us to choose how we look at it and how it gets sewn in.
