For those of you who really know me, you know that I am NOT a graph, charts, analytical metrics kind of girl. I am a journalism major and the fact that my mom paid my husband of 30 years to get me through the class “Math Without Fear” in college, is no joke! I still think math is unnecessary and absolutely useless, but that’s another article for another month.

I recently found myself typing into the Google search bar, “how are we supposed to feel right now during the pandemic.” The giant multi-colored graph that instantly popped up with lots of lines, spirals, dips and upward curves seemed to fully encapsulate my feelings over the past twelve months.

The best part of the graph was I didn’t need to know exactly how to mathematically interpret its meaning. I could tell by looking at it that it represented exactly how we are all feeling-anxiety, liberation, sadness, annoyance, frustration, complacency, burn out, tiredness, resistance and that’s on a good day.

So now what? A lot of us have had at least our first vaccine, schools are reopening to a hybrid approach to learning, we are on the verge of opening indoors at a 50% capacity, and the spring flowers are close to being in explosive full bloom.

But what about the variant strains of the virus? The ones boarding a 747 in London right now heading for SFO? Are we supposed to put on our hazmat suits again before running into Trader Joes for a green drink?

Here’s the thing, whether it is a pandemic, a wedding, wild fires, amazing air quality, a stock market crash, a perfect hair day or global warming, it is all part of this amazing life we get to live!

It will always be a mix of the fabulous, the unknown, the spirals and the curves. It IS what makes this life worth living, and “acceptance” is what should have popped up in Google search bar.

Hang in there, laugh when you can, and know that hope will always prevail.
